The main protagonist is a twelve-year-old boy named Henry York , and the series centers around his search for his true parents and his struggles against the undying witch Nimiane.
The series is named after one hundred magical cupboards. Another night, the plaster from Henry's attic wall starts coming off, revealing two master lock dials to a hundred little locked cupboards. When they are home alone, Henry and Henrietta discover a key in one of the cupboards they have managed to open, which unlocks the door into Grandfather's bedroom. There they find a journal which has a map of the cupboards. One morning Henrietta mysteriously disappears, and Henry discovers a journal entry which tells him how the cupboards work.
He crawls through a cupboard in Grandfather's room to find Henrietta. After several strange adventures he finds her in the ballroom of a palace in a ruined city, but they are unable to return until the master locks of the cupboards are set back to their location, and they hide in a dark cupboard. They witness a group of people with wolves called "Witch-Dogs" kill a party, but they escape. Meanwhile, Uncle Frank attempts to find the two of them while Aunt Dotty tells Penelope and Anastasia that Frank came through the cupboards long ago, and it was their great-grandfather who invented the cupboards and made them work.
And, if you get your hands on the book, look at the back of the book, in the inside jacket--where they give the author's bio. When you see the author's picture you'll smile, just as I did, and think to yourself, "I wish I knew that guy" purely for the expression that he's got on his face! This is the first in a series of 3 books, I think. Now I gotta get my hands on the other two View all 4 comments.
Dec 24, Elizabeth rated it really liked it. This time read aloud to my bf over the course of several weeks. Sharing books that way is a lovely experience, and I highly recommend it to one and all. Oz homages Narnia vibes If I didn't know any better, I'd say N. Wilson wrote the whole thing with a recipe card in front of him "How to make the perfect book for Lizzy". Can't wait to get my hands on the next one. First read in This book, guys. This book. It was so good. I nearly had a heart attack while reading it.
Also, I want a raggant Reread May duh I still love this, but I think I have an appreciation for different aspects of this book now. And I like Henry even more than I did last time.
Mar 14, Cat Carstairs rated it liked it Shelves: middle-grade. To put it simply, I was expecting a lot more. The reason I rated this so lowly is because by the stars, I don't think I've ever read anything so slow with so little action. The summary of the book on the back basically tells you everything that happens and it just wasn't interesting.
Quite literally, a major portion of this book was the main character, a timid and bland boy called Henry, scraping plaster off of his wall to unearth the cupboards. Like, that was it. There were some shots of him playing baseball and eating cereal, but I was so bored out of my mind that this almost became a DNF.
The one and only reason I didn't DNF it was because this trilogy has been sitting in my room for far too long for me to just give up on it now. However, if the next book turns out the same, I'm not going to torture myself any longer. My biggest problem with this book, next to it being incredibly sluggish, was that everything that happened was so jumbled.
Nothing really made any sense, and the author kept sprinkling in what I suppose were meant to be "hints" but were just a filler that leads into the sequel, Dandelion Fire. This first installment did an absolutely horrid job of setting up the rest of the story. It gave me the same feeling I get when I read the second book in a trilogy and nothing happens because it's mainly focused on setting stuff up for book 3, except this was the first book in the series and I was left very confused by the end, as it was underwhelmingly anticlimactic.
The characters all felt like the same person- dry and boring. It was not exactly the thrilling read I was looking for now that I'm going to be trapped in my house for a few weeks because of COVID Hopefully I will be able to breeze through the rest of the series and move on to more interesting novels.
Jun 17, Mem Morman rated it really liked it. This was recommended by - wait for it! It's a children's book, and I like and read children's books, but I did find this pretty scary although I did enjoy it. Twelve year old Henry comes to stay with his aunt and uncle in Henry, Kansas hoping for a summer of baseball.
Instead, or perhaps in addition, he finds that one wall of his attic bedroom is full of small cupboards with locked doors - and each goes somewhere not in this world. The characters three cousins and two sets This was recommended by - wait for it!
The characters three cousins and two sets of parents were well drawn. I found it interesting that Henry's parents off stage for the entire book were as much characters as the much more present Uncle Frank and Aunt Dotty.
I'm going to read the next one - Dandelion Fire - but I reiterate that I really did find this scary in many ways not just traveling to frightening places, but having nasty things crawling into your bedroom through tiny doors. I would never have recommended it to a child, but then, a child recommended it to me.
Aug 24, Leah Waters rated it really liked it Shelves: favorite-books , middle-grade-fantasy. This book is curious--very slow paced, sometimes a little boring, but always mysterious with an enchanting quality. Yes, it takes patience, but it's totally worth it. Partly because things are very fascinating towards the end, but mostly because the sequel, Dandelion Fire, is perfection. As for this book, there's something magical.
Odd and bewitching. I don't know what it is, but it's made it a book to reread many times. Mar 19, Kim rated it it was ok. Oct 01, Jonathan Duff rated it really liked it. It sucked me in. Wasn't what I expected so thumbs up. Aug 10, bethany rated it it was amazing.
Aug 18, Trace rated it liked it. I read this book because my son really loved it and wanted me to read it as well. I wavered between 3 and 4 stars. It certainly kept me hooked from the very beginning. It was extremely plot driven and I felt like not enough time was spent on character development - but I will read the next book in the series and see if this improves. All in all - a good book and I can see why kids love it!
Its a fun, clean adventure!! Feb 14, Calvin Edwards rated it liked it. This book was not as good as I expected, but still good. Near the end it got creepy. But the creepyness made it more interesting. That is why I am rating it 3 stars. View all 6 comments. Sep 19, Kate Willis rated it it was ok Shelves: fantasy. I loved the concept of this book, and the writing style was so delightful!
The characters had depth and surprises to them! Uncle Frank was my absolute favorite, and the view spoiler [fact that he and Henry were from another world hide spoiler ] was so neat. I love Uncle Frank! Unfortunately there were a few rude comments, and the story got too witch-y for me towards the end.
Best quote: Above him, the stars twinkled with laughter. Galaxies looked. Nudged each other. Altogether I found this to have delightful characters and superb writing but a theme a little too magical for my taste.
Dec 23, Peter Krol rated it it was amazing Shelves: fiction. I listened to the audio book version of this book. It was so good that I looked for every opportunity to drive somewhere just so that I could find out what happened next! I also decided NOT to listen to the sequels on audio, but instead to purchase the hard copies to read out loud to my wife.
Update Just listened to the audiobook again, this time with my children. Still just as good. A truly inventive and intriguing piece of world traveling. YA more towards younger fiction where tiny cupboard doors lead to completely different worlds. Readers also enjoyed. Young Adult.
