During this expedition, Magnus helped forge the meek librarian into a true warrior as Quintesson shock troops repeatedly barred their way, and Pax and Magnus formed a bond on the battlefield. During the Golden Age, the Wreckers remained official law enforcement officers, presumably under the overall command of Ultra Magnus.
When the Ark launched with Prime and many of his soldiers to seek the lost AllSpark, Magnus and the Wreckers remained behind to conduct guerrilla warfare tactics against the remaining Decepticon infrastructure. Covenant of Primus. Ultra Magnus was a sergeant of the Council Guardians who held back the Decepticons during the siege of the Hydrax Plateau spaceport despite overwhelming odds. Though the spaceport fell, Magnus and his main soldiers proved to be indispensable soldiers and were dubbed the "Wreckers".
The Wreckers were crucial to holding Tagan Heights , battling Devastator and buying time for the scientists there to build the Protectobot combiner Defensor. When the Ark was completed, Ultra Magnus offered to stay behind and fight off Trypticon when the gargantuan Decepticon emerged.
Trypticon transformed into the Nemesis and pursued the Ark into space, but with his Wreckers and Omega Supreme along with other remaining Autobots, Magnus was ready to battle Shockwave 's new regime.
Ultra Magnus, Springer , and Wheeljack were present when Alpha Trion attempted to send the Autobot Chaindrive across the galaxy via a space bridge. Shockwave finally made his move against Alpha Trion, arresting the sage from the Hall of Records. With Alpha Trion's neutrality no longer permitted, Ultra Magnus planned a rescue op. They were provided support by the recently reactivated Omega Supreme , who would act as a suitable Maccadam still shared the occasional oil with his Decepticon overlords, gathering intelligence.
One of his patrons was an engineer who provided information on the Tower's mag-lev elevator, allowing the Wreckers to access it underground. The Wreckers were nearly accosted by Ratbat and the Decepticon city garrison, but Magnus radioed Omega Supreme who began long-range bombardment of the city, drawing away the Decepticons.
The Wreckers infiltrated Shockwave's secret lair and recovered Alpha Trion, but the situation was more dire than they anticipated. Shockwave had been trying to access Vector Sigma using Alpha Trion's systems, but the Quintessons had secretly tapped into that same circuitry to reactivate the long dormant Space bridge, beginning a Sharkticon invasion of Cybertron.
The Wreckers raced to the Archives, where Alpha Trion intended to detonate the remaining articles of Cybertronian history that the Quintessons could claim. Fortunately, light-years away, Megatron had claimed the Sharkticon Matrix and therefore ended the Quintesson control over their slaves.
Tyrannicon's troopers turned on him and each other, causing the all-but successful invasion to collapse in a matter of minutes. In Uniend Ultra Magnus and his Wreckers were tasked with clearing the team's path to the Well of AllSparks of any Decepticon resistance. When the Autobots neared the Well of AllSparks, they learned that Megatron was moving in much earlier than expected. Ultra Magnus and the Wreckers were posted on the Well's ridge as the Autobots' first line of defense.
Ultra Magnus and his crew encountered Megatron soon enough, as well as a group of fliers that Jetfire had been unable to draw away from the battlefield. Ironhide left his own assigned post to assist Ultra Magnus in preventing Megatron from breaching the Well. After a prolonged effort, the Wreckers succeeded in keeping the Decepticons at bay long enough for the AllSpark to be safely launched.
Bumblebee at Tyger Pax. After Optimus Prime and Megatron had left Cybertron, there was still a convoy of ships that was trying to escape what was left of the war. This convoy was escorted by Ultra Magnus and the Dinobots , who fended the escape crafts from Decepticon saboteurs.
After saving Swoop from the Decepticons who had surrounded him, Ultra Magnus and his personal craft exploded and crashed. Ultra Magnus was pulled from the wreckage by surviving members of the long-lost Predacon faction and relocated to their hideout. Their commander, Ser-Ket , reported to her master, Shockwave , that Ultra Magnus was theirs and ready to be re-forged. Rage of the Dinobots 1. Before Ser-Ket's Decepticons could get to him, Ultra Magnus was broken out of his cell by the Dinobots, who were searching for a captured Swoop.
After letting them know that the lost Dinobot had also fallen into Ser-Ket's clutches, he accompanied his rescuers to the prison's roof where they were confronted by Ser-Ket and her new minion Rage of the Dinobots 2 Believing Swoop to be lost, Ultra Magnus suggested they leave him and focus on rescuing the other Autobots in the prison, but Grimlock ignored him and challenged Ser-Ket to a duel for Swoop's freedom.
Rage of the Dinobots 3 Ser-Ket was defeated, only for her master Shockwave to appear, defeat Ultra Magnus and the others with an EMP , and bring them to his lab to finish his experiments on the Dinobots. Everyone but Grimlock was left in a cell, but broke out by having Magnus and Slug fake an argument, tricking the guards into opening the cell to try to calm them down.
After the Dinobots rescued Grimlock and defeated the avatar Shockwave was using to experiment on him, Ultra Magnus joined the rest of the Autobot fleet in space while the Dinobots elected to remain on Cybertron. Magnus was severely injured by the Predacon Skylynx and is currently, as of Transformers: Prime, in recovery. During the war on Cybertron , Ultra Magnus served as one of Optimus' key lieutenants and one of the best military strategists.
He was also a member of the Elite Guard. When the war began to wane, Magnus took the role as commander of a special Autobot faction called the Wreckers after being assigned by Optimus Prime himself, whose members included Bulkhead and Wheeljack.
His leadership resulted in Wheeljack leaving the unit. As the Ark left Cybertron, Ultra Magnus and his team opted to stay behind on Cybertron to buy the Autobots time to escape from the invading Decepticons. Once the Ark was clear and through the space bridge portal, Ultra Magnus, like so many Autobots, took to traveling the stars alone in his own ship.
Over the years, Ultra Magnus would search for other survivors but would have minimal luck; most times those he did find would just have little time to see them die at the hands of the Decepticons. However, Orion Pax was able to decode the actual image of the real Optimus Prime. Ultra Magnus later found himself working along with the Dinobots , just prior to his departure from Cybertron. While he initially shared the sentiments of other Cybertronians in believing the Dinobots to be dangerously unstable, their performance on their joint mission convinced him of their nobility.
At the climax of the Rage of the Dinobots, after freeing Grimlock , Ultra Magnus requested for the Dinobots to come with him to space, but they refused as there were other autobots on cybertron still, and needed help, respecting their wishes leaves but not before giving them luck.
During his travels, Ultra Magnus detected the energy burst from the Omega Lock caused by Optimus Prime and Megatron 's battle on Cybertron and headed to its target, only to find Earth. He detected five Autobot energy signals and went to investigate. Upon arriving, he learned that Optimus Prime's team had scattered and their base was destroyed in the Decepticon invasion of Jasper. He also found Arcee and Jack Darby and greeted them.
When Jack said his name in amazement, Ultra Magnus told Arcee to have Jack watch his tone, while addressing him as the native. Arcee told Jack that Ultra Magnus was very by the book and to merely play along.
After those authority reminders, Ultra Magnus told the two that he had detected Autobot life signals. After eyeing Jack for not referring to him as sir, Ultra Magnus told him and Arcee that he had detected five, with Arcee's being closest. Elsewhere, Autobots Wheeljack and Bulkhead were attacked by the Predacon. As the two were on the verge of losing against it, Ultra Magnus was able to strike the beast down while in his ship long enough for the two to get aboard.
After Arcee referred Bulkhead and Wheeljack to thank Ultra Magnus for their rescue, Ultra Magnus merely referred to them as soldiers much to their surprise. After Bulkhead told him that it was an honor, Ultra Magnus corrected him by reminding him to address him as "sir. Ultra Magnus was unable to destroy Predaking, but he was able knock the Predacon off the ship by using the sides of a cliff. Ultra Magnus and the Autobots travel to the remains of the Harbinger and there they reunite with Ratchet, Bumblebee, and Raf.
After explaining details about communications and the Groundbridge in the Harbinger, Agent Fowler and June Darby arrive in Fowler's V-tol and reunite with everyone. After discovering that Optimus and Smokescreen are unaccounted for, Magnus takes command of the Autobots and shows the team his arsenal of weapons. Ultra Magnus addressed the Autobots, telling them that they remained vastly outnumbered and despite their ammunitions, did not currently possess the firepower necessary to infiltrate the Decepticon citadel of Darkmount.
After Fowler told him that the military did, but could not get involved due to Megatron having lasers pointed at Washington, he concluded that the Autobots must infiltrate Darkmount, in order to nullify it's fusion cannons.
When Wheeljack suggested that the Autobots would have to sneak past enemy lines Wrecker-style, Ultra Magnus told him that he could not deal with Wrecker-style back on Cybertron and that he refused to deal with it there. Ultra Magnus told the Autobots that they required a means of thinning the Decepticons' ranks to even the odds, especially if they were to have any hope of completing the mission or surviving it. Their plan was to have their human allies use their telecommunications to have the Decepticons come to their location while they GroundBridged back to the Autobot base, thereby removing them from Darkmount.
Ratchet planned for Jack to use his voice and pretend to be one of the Vehicons reporting that they were under attack. After Jack spoke with no response from the Decepticons, Ultra Magnus told Ratchet that he remained unconvinced. Following their success in getting many Vehicons away from Darkmount, Ultra Magnus saw the Autobots off as they prepared to GroundBridge to the Decepticon citadel.
While piloting his ship, Arcee reported to him regarding the numbers of the Vehicons still inside, telling him that security was tighter then expected. Ultra Magnus told her to keep them busy as he arrived on Darkmount himself, shooting down two Vehicons in charge of controls. Just as Ultra Magnus defeated the Vehicons, Megatron dropped in on him, shooting his cannon out of his hand with his own and venturing that he had intended to disarm his fusion cannons by disabling their power core.
Ultra Magnus confirmed his suspicion and told him that he was standing in his way as he drew his blasters and began shooting. Following his defeat, Ultra Magnus was taken to the top of Darkmount, dragged by Megatron and thrown by him as well while the Decepticons rallied up the remainder of the captured Autobots.
Megatron asked him where Optimus Prime was after being told by Starscream that he was not among the captured Autobots before the Autobot leader appeared before them, flying and in a new body as he attacked Megatron. In all the commotion, Ultra Magnus easily defeated Starscream and greeted his leader, telling him that he was looking rather robust before telling him that it was paramount that they disable the fusion cannons below. After Optimus flew off to do just that, Ultra Magnus reported to the Autobots and their human allies that Optimus was alive and well, causing much praise and joyfulness among the team.
Following the destruction of Darkmount, Ultra Magnus retreated with the other Autobots to the military base, which would serve as the new base for the team. After receiving a thank you speech from Agent Fowler, Ultra Magnus told Optimus that he would gladly relinquish command of the Autobots to him. Ultra Magnus and Wheeljack were sent to search through the rubble of the Autobot base.
After returning from this mission, Ultra Magnus told Bumblebee, Arcee, Bulkhead and Ratchet that the two did not find much else in the rubble of their former base before Wheeljack came through the GroundBridge and questioned what he meant by not much before throwing his old lobbing ball at Bulkhead, whom was unprepared to catch it and avoided it, with the ball nearly hitting Miko.
Sadly, Ultra Magnus is the only Autobot who doesn't realize this. Believing he is nothing but a soldier, Ultra Magnus is perfectly willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good if need be. He knows he's more powerful than the average Autobot, and will throw himself at larger threats accordingly.
He is respected by both the Autobots and Decepticons, due to his courage and self-sacrifice. There is a special enmity between him and Galvatron for this reason, for Galvatron may be the most deadly foe of all. Also, Galvatron, given his mental state, probably doesn't approve of people he's had blown up getting back up afterward. This can be seen as a sore point for Magnus, too.
Different iterations of Ultra Magnus are sometimes tied to a small 'bot named Minimus Ambus in some capacity. Ultra Magnus was appointed Commander of Autobot City some time before During the Battle of Autobot City , he could not prevent many of his troops and the reinforcements being slaughtered, including Optimus Prime. Still, honoring Ultra Magnus for his efforts, Optimus handed him the Matrix of Leadership and command of the Autobots.
The Matrix had other ideas though, choosing Rodimus Prime as its bearer instead. Ultra Magnus was okay with that and became Rodimus Prime's trustworthy second-in-command. Despite not being the Prime, Ultra Magnus became a second archenemy to the Decepticon leader Galvatron. The two had many, many fights, and in between, Ultra Magnus also had to deal with the archrival he found in Galvatron's second-in-command Cyclonus. During the Hate Plague outbreak in , Ultra Magnus was one of the infected.
He was cured when a revived Optimus Prime unleashed the energy of the Matrix. With everything back to normal and leadership passed back from Rodimus to Optimus, Ultra Magnus became somewhat of a second-in-command to the latter. He was taken out of commission by a grand scale Decepticon assault on Cybertron, but survived to see the next Cybertronian Golden Age.
In a splinter timeline, Ultra Magnus met his end in at the hands of Sixshot and was subsequently buried on Earth. He was eventually revived to deal with the menace of Galvatron II , a powerful dimension-hopping lunatic. Magnus was then summoned by Alpha Trion to assist alternate reality versions of the Autobots in another dimension, though Magnus found his efforts embroiled in bureaucratic red tape, as the dueling robot factions were in fact corporate rivals in this new universe.
Following the mysterious disappearance of Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus travelled to Earth from Cybertron to take over leadership of the Autobots. Under his leadership, the Autobots established Metroplex as a city to live in, and yet were still able to keep their existence a secret from humanity at large.
Nice work, Magnus! With the Autobots' supply of cybernite running low, Ultra Magnus organized a salvage operation to potentially recover a supply of the material from wreckage strewn about an old battlefield that Kup would lead them to. Magnus's concerns grew when the Decepticons attacked the salvage team, apparently having known of their movements in advance, and the Autobots soon deduced that the villains had a network of spy satellites in orbit, watching them.
Following Kup's advice, Magnus had Huffer and Wheeljack build a power generator that beamed false messages to the satellites, tricking them into colliding with each other and exploding.
Magnus congratulated the Autobots on their team effort, declaring that teamwork was the only way to ultimately triumph over the Decepticons. Galvatron's Air Attack. When a small Decepticon attack force was able to penetrate Metroplex's security perimeter, Ultra Magnus had Bumblebee follow them upon their retreat in hopes of learning how the breach occurred.
Bumblebee discovered that the Decepticons had been able to progressively sneak through the Autobots' spy screen and set up a base within a nearby industrial estate. Magnus led the Autobots in an attack on the Decepticon hideout, during which he faced off with Galvatron himself. Magnus stumbled and fell before the Decepticon leader, but Spike Witwicky saved him by downing Galvatron with a wrecking ball.
Decepticon Hideout. Ultra Magnus personally chose a new S. Commander, to whom he sent a message inviting them to take up the role. This message guided the recipient through an exercise using "the special power you humans call 'imagination'" to visualize what it would be like to be several different Transformers , Autobots and Decepticons included.
After that, the recipient was given the opportunity to "requisition" those Transformers for their "Command" via a form marked with the following address:. Box , Dept. T10 North Hollywood , CA You Have Been Chosen. Ultra Magnus came upon Castle Decepticon while piloting a shuttle. His approach activated the Decepticon base's defenses, and Ultra Magnus was forced to eject from the shuttle in an escape pod. Ultra Magnus was then able to find his way back to his downed shuttle, only to be confronted by Starscream.
Ultra Magnus's shuttle had been repaired by the Decepticons'automated robots, who had mistook it for one of their own. The advantage lay with either Starscream or Ultra Magnus depending on what changes the drones had implemented in the shuttle. Transformers Pop-Up Book. Ultra Magnus and Optimus attempted to trick Starscream into thinking a bomb was a Blackball , and succeeded, much to their surprise.
Don't Cry! Ultra Magnus later reported that the Autobots had run out of ammo, and as a result, they were forced to throw rocks at Deathsaurus instead. Good Job! Deliver the Finishing Blow! God Ginrai!! Magnus and Rodimus Prime enjoyed many victories against the Decepticons, but who was that in the background?
At one point, the Blackball was left in the safekeeping of Ultra Magnus. Galvatron, catching Magnus by surprise, managed to blow him up with a powerful energy blast from his fusion cannon. Recovering the Blackball, Galvatron began to gloat about his victory. That's when Magnus' body hurled his head at Galvatron like a bowling ball, causing the Emperor of Destruction to fall over like a set of pins and drop the Blackball.
That's using your head , Magnus! Ultra Magnus! This character article is a stub and is missing information on their fictional appearances.
You can help Transformers Wiki by expanding it. He led them into battle to serve as reinforcements for the Dinobots. Once Ultra Magnus and his troops defeated Galvatron and his troops, he and the other Autobots were cheered on by the nearby Oil rig workers as they drove back to Autobot City.
Battle at Oil Valley. Ultra Magnus was approached by Blurr who attempted to tell him something important. Unfortunately, Ultra Magnus could not understand him as Blurr was talking too fast. When a more articulate Autobot informed him that the Decepticons had learned of a lost Autobot shipment of Energon and were planning to unearth it from the Ark's crash site, Ultra Magnus held a brief conference to figure out how to deal with the situation.
He then headed a team to St. Hillary, only to find the Decepticons already there, digging for the Energon shipment. The two factions began to fight. When the Energon stash was uncovered, it was completely gobbled up by Starscream who proclaimed himself the most powerful Decepticon.
With nothing left to fight over, Ultra Magnus and the Autobots left Galvatron and Starscream to their squabble. The Lost Treasure of Cybertron. When he asked the pair what was going on, Hot Rod informed him that he was excited to head to a car show, where the humans would be showing off a new kind of robot car. Later in the day, Hot Rod came up to Ultra Magnus once more, this time to inform him that the Decepticons were planning on attacking the very same Colosseum in which the car show was taking place that day.
Even more alarming, Kup was supposed to have returned by now. Hot Rod concluded that the Decepticons had done something to him. Ultra Magnus led a convoy of Autobots in a rescue mission. Remaining in their vehicle forms, they paraded themselves in the Colosseum as the human onlookers admired their sleek forms. Elsewhere, Kup managed to make Galvatron trip through a window onlooking the show, sending him flying into the arena.
Transforming, Ultra Magnus and his troops took the Decepticon leader hostage. But the Decepticons still had Kup as a hostage of their own, and demanded Galvatron's release, lest they open fire on the human crowd. Though they defeated the Decepticons, Galvatron managed to escape in the chaos, not that Ultra Magnus was too worried over the fact. Car Show Blow Up. Ultra Magnus participated in a tumultuous battle on a moon base. He and Defensor stood their ground against Bruticus and Trypticon.
Decipher the Decepticon. When the Creation Matrix was stolen by the Decepticons, Ultra Magnus called upon his fellow Autobots to help retrieve it. Thanks to an army of decoys created by First Aid, the Autobots successfully infiltrated the Decepticon base and retrieved their sacred relic. Start Your Own Decoy Collection. Ultra Magnus assigned Kup to be in charge of a secret mission. As the Autobot leader was making his rounds of Metroplex, he dropped by Kup's station to check in on him, but was interrupted by an Autobot Alert before he could do so.
Cosmos informed Magnus of Decepticons encroaching upon Earth orbit. After Cosmos's transmission was cut short, Bumblebee came rushing into the room to inform Ultra Magnus that the television broadcast signal had been hijacked by the Decepticons. Putting two and two together, Ultra Magnus deduced that the Decepticons had taken over Earth's communication satellites. Soon afterwards, Blurr came back prematurely from the mission being organized by Kup, informing that the Decepticons had gotten their hands on an important coded message.
After donning special space gear for solar protection, the team took off and headed towards Cosmos's last coordinates. Though they quickly spotted Cosmos, Ultra Magnus also caught sight of Galvatron's spaceship, Cyclonus, looming nearby. Ultra Magnus ordered his troops to pull Cosmos aboard before they were spotted by the enemy forces. Deciding on an immediate plan of action, Ultra Magnus ordered his troops to train all their weapons on Cyclonus, and prepare for a full-frontal assault.
Though Mirage exhibited doubts that this strategy would work, Ultra Magnus stood by his decision. If the Autobots went ahead with Ultra Magnus's plan, soon after the Autobots had begun their assault, Galvatron emerged from Cyclonus, leading into battle an army of multiwing jet fighter Decepticons. Faced against such overwhelming odds, Ultra Magnus attempted to retreat, only for their shuttle to be hit by a blast from Galvatron himself. With their shuttle falling apart around them, Ultra Magnus and his troops were defeated by the Decepticons.
If instead Powerglide and Swoop went about their own way of defeating the Decepticons, Cyclonus's transmission device was successfully destroyed and the entire crew of the Autobot shuttle presumably returned to base safely. In a completely different possible sequence of events, if Ultra Magnus instead decided to prioritize the theft of the coded message, he allowed for Kup to divulge to the rest of the Autobots the top secret nature of the mission at hand. Once there, the Autobots learned that the cybertite sphere had crashed on Earth in a nearby crater, but was later moved by humans during the 16th century.
If the Decepticons had decoded Springer's message, they would be searching off the coast of California, where the ship containing the sphere had sunk. If they hadn't decoded the message, the Decepticons would still be digging in the nearby crater. Springer was for heading towards the crater first. If Ultra Magnus decided to assume that the Decepticons had already decrypted the message, he ordered his forces to split up to more efficiently address the situation.
Ultra Magnus led the main force heading towards the California coast. Just as Ultra Magnus and his troops arrived at the coast, they were signalled by Powerglide that he had discovered the sunken ship containing the cybertite sphere, and caught up by Blurr who informed them of the Decepticons headed in their direction. The Autobots then needed to decide whether they would raise the ship themselves, or try and ambush the Decepticons after they had done so.
Ultra Magnus ultimately came up with three separate plans. The first involved Sludge raising the ship by encircling it cables, then allowing Hot Rod to search the ship. The second plan relied on Seaspray searching for the sphere while the ship remained underwater. The third plan counted on Grapple, Hot Rod and Bumblebee working together to retrieve the sphere. If Ultra Magnus decided on the first plan, he soon began doubting himself as the dimwitted Dinobot displayed difficulty in following through with the orders given to him.
Though Sludge and Hot Rod eventually succeeded in retrieving the sphere, Ultra Magnus made it clear to his troops that there was no time for celebration, as he noticed incoming Decepticons.
Tasking Blurr with taking the sphere to Metroplex, Ultra Magnus ordered the rest of his troops to hide. As the Decepticons arrived, Ultra Magnus then led the ambush that left the Decepticons defeated that day. If Ultra Magnus decided on the second plan, Seaspray successfully retrieve the sphere and presented it to his commander. However, Optimus believes that they still have a fighting chance, though Ultra Magnus is mainly focused on survival and tells Optimus to accept the treaty, but Optimus will do no such thing.
Episode 1. Ultra Magnus goes to Megatron and surrenders. And together, they won that battle. They fought as brothers back then. Ultra Magnus has grown weary of endless war. He was hoping the three of them could sit down together. And so, Megatron tells Jetfire to put Ultra Magnus in a cell. However, they did manage to use it to their advantage.
They hacked his comm frequency and are planning to kill the Autobots. When he refuses, Megatron punches him and orders Shockwave to begin his preparations to reformat the Autobots. Episode 2. Shockwave tortures Ultra Magnus for the location of Autobot Command. Ultra Magnus tells Megatron that Optimus will end this war. With Ultra refusing to give up, Shockwave will have to turn to more unorthodox methods.
However, Ultra Magnus steals a blaster from a Decepticon and points it at Megatron, ordering him to turn around. But, Megatron refuses as he knows that Ultra Magnus has too much honor to shoot someone in the back. Shockwave resumes his torture of Ultra Magnus, who is resilient. He tells Megatron not to make Cybertron suffer and not to become those they rose against. Ultra Magnus gives in and agrees to give them the location of Autobot Command.
Episode 3. More Cybertronias fell at Tarn-Hauser than at any other conflict in history. Alpha Trion sparked a revolution and the Autobots corrupted his message, or so Megatron claims. Megatron asks Jetfire if the Seekers are ready and then asks Barricade if the ground forces are ready. Ultra Magnus opens the door to reveal an empty room. Jetfire arrives. Episode 4. Ultra Magnus came from Cybertron to take over the leadership of the Autobots after Optimus Prime disappeared.
He is opposed by Galvatron as Decepticon leader and this is presented as a prolonged status quo rather than the rather brief version of this scenario presented in the animated continuity. Furthermore Spike Witwicky appears to still be a teenager at this point, making a set date of unlikely. Galvatron's Air Attack Decepticon Hideout. Ultra Magnus functioning as Prime's successor for some time rather than being immediately replaced by Rodimus Prime is presented in this and other micro-continuities based on the action figure line rather than the film.
It is not generally known that, quite apart from Unicron and Galvatron, Clark Kent also sought the destruction of the Matrix. The remaining Autobot elders spent years designing Ultra Magnus, a leader to lift the resistance out of a deep darkness. He was finally given life in or shortly before [1] for Operation:Volcano.
His role was to act as the crucial back-up needed for the Wreckers to successfully destroy their Decepticon targets and then escape in one piece. A serious complication arose when the Matrix Flame, the sacred and eternal blaze linked directly to the Creation Matrix itself, suddenly extinguished.
Fearing that something catastrophic had occurred on Earth to the Matrix and its bearer, Optimus Prime, Emirate Xaaron made the decision to send Ultra Magnus to that planet to investigate, even though Operation Volcano was unstoppably set to begin in ten cycles. Magnus traveled to Earth by way of Space Bridge and found the Ark's crew engaged in a deadly conflict with three new, yet unspeakably powerful, Decepticon warriors just as their leaders Optimus Prime, Prowl , and Ratchet vanished before their optic sensors.
Initially concerned only with his investigation of Prime's sudden disappearance, Ultra Magnus ignored the plight of his fellow Autobots until he learned the two situations were linked; Galvatron and his lieutenants were time-travelers from , having employed a mass-substitution mechanism that sent the three Autobots into limbo in order to accommodate their presence at this point in the timeline. This connection was revealed to him by three Autobots from , who had traveled back in time themselves in order to stop Galvatron.
They had a plan; they had the means; all they needed was for Ultra Magnus to keep him busy for, oh Magnus' battle with Galvatron carried them out of the isolated wilderness and onto a human freeway system. It ended when Ultra Magnus threw a tanker truck full of fuel into the path of Galvatron's particle cannon. Galvatron walked away from the blast -- Magnus didn't. Still, the future Autobots succeeded in tricking Galvatron into returning to the future with his plan incomplete, and the timeline more-or-less preserved.
Unfortunately, Magnus was out of time: Operation Volcano proceeded without him, with disastrous results. Only one Decepticon was taken out, and the Wreckers' leader Impactor was killed protecting Xaaron. Target Ultra Magnus would not meet his counterpart, Optimus Prime until Prime was inadvertently transported back to Cybertron in battle with Megatron. Hooking up with Lord Straxus at Polyhex , Megatron quickly disseminated false information about a new Decepticon made over to look exactly like Optimus Prime, planning to infiltrate the Autobot forces.
Having temporarily assumed control of the Wreckers until their new leader, Springer , was ready for command, Ultra Magnus led them in hunting down the "impostor".
This Prime's behavior led Magnus to be suspicious of his information and, after summoning Emirate Xaaron, confirmed his suspicions and welcomed the true Optimus Prime back to Cybertron. Distant Thunder! Prime wasted no time leading Magnus and the others on a series of successful raids and strike missions against Decepticon-controlled territory. When Optimus decided to return home to Earth, however, Ultra Magnus was caught up in the space bridge's energy discharge as well, arriving on Earth but some considerable distance away from where Prime materialized.
Having been frustrated ever since Impactor's death, Magnus welcomed the "vacation" this trip to Earth would provide him, and he took his time trying to track down the Ark's location. For months, Ultra Magnus enjoyed a peaceful life in the American forests and wilderness, alone with his thoughts. A sudden seismic disturbance brought him back to reality, though, and into contact with three human females whose vehicle had been overturned by the tremor.
One, in particular, Cindy, took quite a liking to Magnus. As they traveled together to explore a nearby volcano and its connection to the tremors, Magnus was forced back into combat thanks to the arrival of his old sparring partner, the future Decepticon known as Galvatron. Burning Sky! Galvatron had constructed a magma siphon atop the volcano's peak and planned to convert the raw power of a volcanic eruption into enough energy to transform him into a god.
Ultra Magnus teamed up with several Autobots from the future, who were trying to bring Galvatron back with them to face justice. Once again, Magnus was used as a "distraction" read: living punching bag while the future Autobots set up their plan to override Galvatron's time-jump mechanism and send them all back where they came from.
Despite Ultra Magnus successfully getting the slag beat out of him, the override proved unsuccessful, sending only the Autobots back to and leaving Magnus virtually alone to deal with the fighting-mad Galvatron.
Fire on High! Barely managing to rally his courage, Ultra Magnus threw himself into combat with Galvatron one more time, keeping him busy until the volcano exploded, destroying the power siphon and encasing both warriors in molten lava. Vicious Circle! They had been sent to Earth by Springer to monitor the volcano in case Galvatron ever got free. When Galvatron DID free himself several days earlier, though, they found themselves hopelessly outmatched and hoped Magnus would have better luck.
Sadly, the severe beatings Galvatron had routinely handed out to Ultra Magnus, combined with the final excruciating submergence in molten lava, had nearly unhinged the Autobot's mind, leaving him with a pathological fear of his tormentor.
